The organizers of the 27th World University Olympics are deploying a TETRA network to provide security. Local TETRA operator MS-Spetstelecom was selected to provide the communications services and it will be deploying Damm’s TETRAFlex solution. Around 12,000 athletes and tens of thousands of staff and spectators are expected at the Games, which will be held in the city of Kazan, capital of the Republic of Tatarstan within the Russian Federation. Competitions will take place at 64 different sports venues across the region, 30 of which have been specially constructed for the 2013 games. With such numbers and such diversity of locations it is essential that emergency, public safety and fast-response staff have access to a robust and reliable communications system. The Government of Tatarstan plans to connect almost 3000 radios to the system which will be used by security and safety staff. MS-Spetstelecom is also providing communications services to 2500 subscribers of The Executive Directorate of the XXVII Summer Universiade in Kazan. MS-Spetstelecom is utilising Damm’s outdoor base stations, removing the need to construct an expensive antenna and cable infrastructure. The TETRAFlex base stations can be transported to where they are needed, quickly mounted to a wall or post and switched on. This flexibility is particularly important given the geographical spread of the event locations and the city’s hilly topography, which could have presented signal and reception problems. Sixteen outdoor base stations will be installed at locations which will provide full coverage of all areas of the city and the games venues as well as 200 user groups and in excess of 5000 subscribers. After the Games have finished, MS-Spetstelecom intends to keep the system in operation for the use of the city’s emergency and fast-response services. There are plans to extend the network by up to 40 additional base stations to provide services during the 2018 FIFA World Cup and along federal roads in the Republic of Tatarstan.
