终端通过红外接口与其他具备红外收发单元的设备连接，如电脑、手机、打印机、投影仪等。终端可以通过红外接口与电脑、其他手机同步电话簿、邮件，发送或接收图像、音乐文件。终端支持异步SIR（9.6~115.2kbps）、同步SIR（最高1.15Mbps）、同步FIR（最高4Mbps）方式之一与其他设备进行通讯。
本要求的前提条件是：终端配备红外接口。若前提条件不满足，则终端不必遵守本要求。
如下是对终端的要求：
1）终端配备红外接口用于短距离的点对点的数据通信。
2）终端的红外接口应符合如下标准的要求：
a）IrDA Link Access Protocol v1.1
b）IrDA Link Access Protocol - Fast Connect
c）IrDA Link Management Protocol v1.1
d）IrDA Tiny TP v1.1
e）IrDA Physical Layer Specification v1.4
f） IrDA Infrared Mobile Communications (IrMC) v1.1
g）IrDA Object Exchange (OBEX) Protocol v1.3
h）IrDA Infrared Communications Protocol (IrCOMM) - IrCOMM Protocol v1.0
i） IrDA Point and Shoot Profile v1.1
终端厂家自行决定是否支持如下Profile：
1）IrDA Infrared Transfer Picture Specification v1.0
2）IrDA Financial Messaging (IrFM) Point and Pay
3）IrDA IrFM IrVoucher Profile
