The number of mobile subscribers connected to iDEN networks has reached 10 million outside the U.S., Motorola announced on Thursday.

According to Motorola, which developed the technology, more than 30 operators worldwide are running iDEN networks in 23 countries.

"This recent milestone reinforces iDEN's unique offerings in the wireless space, enabling the combination of two-way radio capabilities with cellular phone technology, data and paging in one subscriber device," Motorola said in a statement.

Indeed, the key feature of the technology is its ability to support push-to-talk (PTT) services, which have gained some traction in the Americas.

"The differentiated offering of iDEN technology and its push-to-talk service is important to Motorola's consumers and business customers," said Mark Shockley, senior vice president, Motorola Mobile Devices.

Shockley added that Moto is continuing to update its iDEN portfolio, referring in particular to the Motorola i1, the world's first Android-powered smartphone with PTT.

Motorola launched the i1 in March in partnership with U.S. operator SprintNextel. Two months later NII Holdings said it would offer the device through its Nextel operating units in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.

NII Holdings is a major iDEN operator on the global stage, running iDEN networks in five Latin American markets. At the end of June the company reported having a total of 8.2 million subscribers.
