China''s analog trunking systems were required to be closed on December 31, according to the document No. 518 issued by the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) in 2001. 

The original market space will be filled by digital trunking systems. It means China''s trunking communications industry will have a new growth this year. 

The withdrawal of analog trunking systems from the market is for the technological upgrade. The aging of the existing analog trunking systems is also a major reason, said Meng Yumei, deputy general manager of the Wireless Communications Division of China Satcom, a minor telecom carrier. 

Although the analog trunking systems have a certain market ground, its growth is dependent on the number of the users of special trunking mobile communications services. 

The country introduced analog trunking systems from 1989, put them into use in 1990, achieved a fast growth in 1993, but developed slowly after 1995. The channels of the country''s analog trunking systems totaled no more than 10,000 and the number of users was only about 200,000 in 1999. 

China''s trunking communications is still at the developing stage now. It does not go with the country''s economic development and the social demand, and users have an urgent demand for the digital trunking dispatch, according to Jiang Chunsheng, deputy general manager of the Technological Division of China Tietong, a fixed-line telecom operator. 

The implementation of the document is durative, and eth analog trunking system needs not to be closed completely in a period, said an official with the MII. The frequency cancellation and digital trunking frequency allocation are two major problems obsessing the concerned decision-makers. 

As the digital trunking system market has a bright prospect, the digital trunking equipment providers, network carriers, and terminal users are getting close to the field. The industry chain is also taking shape and the large-scale commercialization is coming closer. 

However, most of the users are still at the analog level, and there is still few application of digital trunking systems. And there are many problems in the aspects of interconnection and integral construction. 

The upgrade of analog trunking communications to digital trunking communications will bring along huge market spaces to domestic and foreign equipment providers. 

For now, the TETRA and iDEN are overseas technological standards widely applied in the digital trunking communications field, which are supported by international giants like Motorola and Nokia

Comparatively, the domestic equipment providers had no achievements in the analog trunking age. Tremendous difficulties and unprecedented opportunities are waiting ahead for Chinese companies in the digital trunking time when the standard and frequency have not been decided. 

MII decided Huawei''s GT800 and ZTE''s GoTa to be China''s referential technological standard for the trunking industry in November 2004. 

Now GoTa has had over 100 CDMA-based trunking core patents. The technology has accomplished MTNet testing and field testing by MII. Now ZTE, together with carriers, has started the technological standardization work of GoTa in Russia, Malaysia, and Northern Europe. 

Huawei''s GT800 has obtained the recognition from international standard organizations. The 3GPP GERAN joint meeting held in Ireland in last May passed four proposals on Huawei''s GT800. The pass of these proposals means GT800 has become China''s first digital trunking standard recognized by the international standard organizations.
